Home Fitness: Exercise in Comfort

April 03, 2019 2 min read

Exercise is a well-known cure for many ailments, both physical and mental. While many have gym memberships, they can be difficult to maintain as they require drive time and ongoing expense. Home fitness equipment is a great solution for those who prefer to work out in the privacy of their own homes and purchase equipment once, rather than paying for its use on a continual basis. The trick to making home fitness work is identifying which equipment you enjoy enough to actually use on a consistent basis and not turn into a clothing hanger. Many sellers of home fitness equipment will allow you to visit their showroom and try out different types of equipment so you know what works best for you. As evidenced by the facts below, poor diet and exercise habits are more than vanity issues.

Studies from 2009 to 2010 show that more than 78 million U.S. adults and approximately 12.5 million (16.9%) children and adolescents are obese. Half of all U.S. adults are expected to qualify as obese by 2030.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that only one in three children is physically active on a daily basis. A sedentary lifestyle early on can lead to health problems later in life. Today's youth get less exercise than ever. Children can generally be found on a device for more than 7.5 hours a day, and nearly one-third of high school students play video games over three hours on an average school day.

Since the 1970s, the number of fast food locations has more than doubled. The average American diet exceeds the recommended limits on calories from solid fats, added sugars, and refined grains. At least one in three Americans develops Type 2 diabetes, but regular physical activity can help prevent or mitigate this illness. These issues don't come cheap. The annual cost of being overweight is estimated at $524 for women and $432 for men. Annual costs for being obese are even higher, at $4,879 for women and $2,646 for men.

It's not necessary to be a marathon runner to achieve fitness. 30 minutes of moderate exercise three to four days per week should be sufficient for many. Take a spin on various types of gym equipment and find your next (or first!) addition to your home gym. Your health will thank you!
