Between hectic daily schedules and fast-food restaurants on nearly every corner, waiting to lure you inside, a home fitness routine isn't always a high priority. Statistics from the US. Department of Health and Human Services show that fewer than 5% of adults are physically active for 30 minutes a day, and only one-third of them engage in the suggested amount of weekly physical activity. Children are less physically active as well. They clock over 7.5 hours of screen time daily, and nearly one-third of high-schoolers spend at least three hours a day playing their favorite computer or video games.

Our love of fast food has increased as well, with the number of these eateries more than doubling since the 1970s. In America, the average person's diet exceeds the recommended level of or amount of calories from fats, processed grains, saturated fats, and added sugars.

That can all change with two little words: Regular. Exercise.

The hardest part is getting started, but before you know it, you'll be reaping the benefits of your new home fitness regime, and here are just a few of them.

1. A Healthier Heart.

The Cleveland Clinic advises that for better cardiovascular health, you should do 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, five days each week. That amounts to a minimum of 2.5 hours weekly. This can lead to reduced blood pressure and lower your cholesterol levels, according to the Better Health Channel.

2. Preventing and Managing Type 2 Diabetes.

A minimum of one out of every three people in America will develop Type 2 diabetes. Being physically active on a regular basis can aid in preventing and managing it.

3. You'll Just Feel Better in General.

Better Health Channel also believes that when you start exercising on a regular basis, you may find yourself in a better mood, feeling more energetic, and sleeping like a baby at night. And if you can slip into that pair of jeans you haven't been able to squeeze into for years, that's just icing on the -- it has to be said -- cake.

Getting into a regular home fitness routine isn't as scary as it sounds. Pick up some exercise equipment that doesn't resemble a medieval torture device. Turn off the TV and computer, and do something that gets you moving. It's really important to remember that whatever activity you choose, make sure it's something you enjoy, or sooner or later, you'll lose interest in it, and back on the couch you'll sit. If you love music, put on a record and dance. Go to a sports store and see what strikes your fancy. If that's not your thing, put on your tennis shoes, grab a friend and go for a walk. About 30% of individuals aged 15 and up who regularly exercise report that they exercise by walking. That makes it the most popular type of exercise, so you'll be in good company.

Whatever you do to be more active, the main thing is to follow the advice of the familiar slogan and "Just do it!"
